INFORMATION ON MPEG 2.0 PLAYER FOR WINDOWS 3.1*, ALL SVGA CARDS SUPPORTED!
[NOTE: mpeginf = Info file cribbed from abped, describing mpeg player]
If there is no DLL expressly written for your SVGA card, merely
grab any DLL archive. With this version it doesn't matter, you don't
need to have the SVGA card. You just need the DLLs to start the program;
then, once the program has begun, specify "Use DIB" and you will be
able to view the MPEGs. Be sure to save your configuration within
the program, so the viewer will automatically be configured to
use the DIB interface the next time you load the viewer.
*** VERY IMPORTANT / MUY IMPORTANTE / SEHR WICHTIG ***
Be sure you place the *.DLL files and DLL.LST in your \windows\system
subdir!
**** Did you read the above very important information? ****
*** Haben Sie das gelesen? ***
If you don't have a supported card, I recommend getting mpegexe.zip and
mdllati.zip, since the MPEG player looks for (by default) the ATI
.DLLs.
If you have a supported card, snag the DLL and also mpegexe.zip.
The DLL should increase video playback by a respectable rate.
The DLLs are named as "mdll*.zip," with the characters after "mdll"
specifying what card the DLLs are for:
ati: ATI VGA Wonder XL (recommended if you don't see one for yer SVGA)
cir: Cirrus 640x480
cpq: Compaq Q-vision
cr8: Cirrus 800x600
s3 : S3
s3h: S3 - 64k colors
s38: S3 805 256 colors
tri: trident 8900
tsg: tseng et4000
v7 : video 7
wd : western digital
If you are using a DLL file other than mdllati.zip, you may have to do one
of the following. Here are three ways to get it working. Choose the
method which seems best to you.
METHOD ONE:
Run mfw.exe in Windows. It will abort, complaining it can't find ATI
dll's.
Load mfw.ini (in same subdir as mfw.exe) and edit "VDriver" variable
to accomodate your driver. Here is the default from my system:
[MPEG for Windows]
Copyright.=Copyright (C) Xing Technology Corp. 1991-1992. All rights
reserved.
VersionID.=Version 2.0
FileSrcDir=c:\mpeg
BkgColor=1
BkgWidth=4
QBITS=2
QLevel=1
Sound_DLL=0
UseDIB=0
VidWidth=320
VDriver=0
Note the "VDriver" variable, set to 0.
Now peek in DLL.LST, in \windows\system:
11 ; Number of MPEG Libraries
ATI, "ATI VGA Wonder" ; Root, Description for MPEG Driver 1
CPQ, "Compaq VGA" ; Root, Description for MPEG Driver 2
TRI, "Trident" ; Root, Description for MPEG Driver 3
TSG, "Tseng Labs ET4000" ; Root, Description for MPEG Driver 4
V7, "Video Seven VGA" ; Root, Description for MPEG Driver 5
CIR, "Cirrus 640x480" ; Root, Description for MPEG Driver 6
S3, "S3" ; Root, Description for MPEG Driver 7
S3H, "S3 - 64k colors" ; Root, Description for MPEG Driver 8
S3H, "S3 805 256 colors" ; Root, Description for MPEG Driver 9
WD, "Western Digital" ; Root, Description for MPEG Driver 10
CR8, "Cirrus 800x600" ; Root, Description for MPEG Driver 11
According to this, the ATI driver is Driver #1. But it is understood by
mfw.exe to be Driver "0," because computers consider "0" to be the first
number (hence, Driver 1). To find the correct number for your dll, find it
in the above DLL.LST textfile, and subtract one.
For example, if you are using a S3 card ("S3") you'll note it is "MPEG
Driver 7." Subtract 1 and you get 6. This is the number to keep in mind.
Now edit the variable "VDriver" in mfw.ini to reflect the DLL you will be
using. Pretend we are going to tell it to use the S3 dll:
Change
VDriver=0
to
VDriver=6
Be sure you save mfw.ini. Also make sure you place all the S3 dlls in
\windows\system. Place all other DLLs from the mpegexe.zip archive there
too, like MSND*.DLL, so you can hear digital audio with your MPEGs which
have audio (.wav file) soundtracks. You will only hear audio if you have a
sound driver for Windows.

Nope, the *.DLL files belong in the SYSTEM directory, just like you did it.
This is a common problem, and it's pretty easy to fix. See that DLL.LST
file? You're going to have to edit it. Change the number in the top
line (it should be 11), change it to 1. Now delete every line but the
one for the appropriate driver (in your case, the Trident). Save the
modified file in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

I just renamed my driver (WD) as the ATI driver and left the .INI
file alone. This seemed to work fine.
